Test the message evidence in its available context
A screenshot or copied chat may show useful content, but it may not preserve the underlying record, source path, participant data, time basis, attachment relationship or surrounding conversation. The most reliable scope starts by identifying the proposition in dispute and the best available sources.
Alistair can compare message presentations with an extraction, database, device, backup, export or related account records where those sources are lawfully available. The review distinguishes what is directly observed from what is inferred about origin, sequence, editing, deletion or authorship.

Messaging questions that may be addressed
- Whether screenshots, chat exports and available extraction records are consistent with one another.
- Whether relevant messages, replies, attachments, participants or surrounding context are missing from a presentation.
- How timestamps, time zones, device clocks, edits, forwarding and application behaviour affect the sequence shown.
- Whether deleted, cached, synchronised or restored records can be distinguished from active conversation data.
- Which conclusions about the account, device or human author remain unsupported without other evidence.
Useful sources to retain
- The original handset and any existing forensic extraction package.
- Native chat exports with their media folders and original file structure.
- Screenshots, served schedules or reports together with an account of how they were produced.
- Available backups, linked devices and related message or account records.
- A focused date range, participants and the exact proposition the messages are said to support.
Limits of messaging evidence
- No method can guarantee recovery of deleted messages from every device, application version or backup.
- Screenshots can be reviewed but usually carry less provenance and context than native records or an extraction.
- Application design, encryption, retention, cloud services and device changes can limit the records available.
- An account name, number or device record does not by itself identify the person who authored a message.
- App labels and tool categories require interpretation; they are not automatically proof that an edit or deletion occurred as alleged.
What helps scope a messaging review
- Party names and relevant phone numbers or account names for the conflict check only.
- The messages, participants, date range and technical proposition in issue.
- Whether the source handset, extraction, export, screenshots, backup or served report is available.
- Approximate extraction size or message volume and any known access restrictions.
- Jurisdiction, report deadline, hearing date and funding route.

Frequently asked questions
Can WhatsApp screenshots be verified for court?
They can be examined and compared with available source material, but a screenshot alone usually cannot establish the complete history or human authorship. The opinion must reflect the sources and limitations actually available.
Can deleted WhatsApp messages be recovered?
Sometimes relevant records remain on a device, in a database, extraction or backup, but availability depends on the device, application, settings and subsequent use. Recovery is never guaranteed.
